STEWARDSHIP APPEAL FOR 2012: With the ingathering on Sunday, 6 November—All Saints’ Sunday— fast approaching, we are now near the conclusion of our Pledge Drive for 2012. As I mentioned in the last issue of News & Notes, our prayer is that even in a time when many people are experiencing economic distress, we can still give generously to All Saints’, proud of our rich heritage of worship and ministry in thanksgiving for all the ways God so richly blesses us.  Please continue to consider our appeal prayerfully, using this prayer from the

Book of Common Prayer:

O merciful Creator, your hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of very living creature: Make us always thankful for your loving providence; and grant that we… may be faithful stewards of your good gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord…Amen.

REST IN PEACE:  The Rev. John Howard Staley died on Wednesday, 19 October, at the age of seventy-five from complications following heart surgery two weeks earlier. John has been associated with All Saints’ since the early 1960s when he served as the Parish Seminarian from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley where he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1962. Prior to becoming a volunteer Pastoral Associate at All Saints’ in 1975, John served as a priest in various churches in California (Anaheim, Los Angeles, and Glendale).  He was also a brother in the Society of St. Francis.  While at All Saints’, John served regularly at Sunday and weekday masses, was active in several ministries in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District including St. Anthony Foundation, and was a prophetic voice for peace, justice, and civil rights for African- Americans, women, and the LGBT community.  His Requiem and interment in the columbarium in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at All Saints’ was held on Thursday, 27 October.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN PRESCOTT, on his Life Profession in the Third Order of the Society of St. Francis. John made his Life Profession in August, after completing a four-year period as a Novice in the Order. The Third Order consists of men and woman who are single or in committed relationships and who, though following “ordinary professions,” are called to a dedicated life of service through a rule of prayer, study, and work, in company with the sisters and brothers in the society’s First Order. We will honor John’s life profession by a special commissioning at the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, 13 November.  Brother Jude Hill, Minister Provincial for the Province of the Americas of the Society of St. Francis, will visit us to preach.

WELCOME TO WILLIAM VISSCHER  as the Interim Minister of Music at All Saints’.  Certified as a Master Organ Builder by the American Institute of Organ Builders, Bill is currently an organ builder at Hupalo & Repasky Pipe Organs in San Leandro.  Bill has served as a minister of music in Episcopal, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and United Church of Christ congregations, and will be leaving his present position as Music Director and Organist at Saint John Episcopal Church in Aptos, California, to come to All Saints’. Bill will be commissioned on the First Sunday of Advent, 27 November.

•     Margaret Hamilton  and Margaret Taylor, who served as docents at All Saints’ during the Cole Valley House Tour; to Walter Knowles, who played the organ throughout the afternoon of the tour; and to Laurie Rus, who made the arrangements with the Victorian Alliance.

Wow! How does one thank you all for the book and thoughtful card?  (I understand this was Larry’s idea—well, it worked!) The card is something tangible I have that expresses the heart of this parish family.  It is a treasure to be treasured.

It has not taken me long to miss you and feel like something is missing on Sunday mornings. But my prayers are with you. And I will be in the congregation on All Saints’ Sunday.

I am grateful for all the guidance, wisdom, and love I have received over the years. Memory is a wonderful thing—it can carry one over the years and place one back in the heart and joy of being with someone or some place.

FAREWELL: During our Stewardship Appeal we will say farewell to two people, honoring them for the stewardship of their time, talent, and treasure at All Saints’: volunteer Pastoral Associate Judith Dunlop on Sunday, 9 October, and Pastoral Associate Walter Knowles, Minister of Music, on Sunday, 6 November. Each is leaving All Saints’ for reasons best stated in tributes they wrote about how much our parish means to them.

Judith writes [on 12 September]: Twenty one years ago I came to All Saints’ having just graduated from seminary. Although I have periodically gone off on other assignments, my heart has always been in this spiritually generous community. Last week the doctors advised me that I have more brain tumors and will need treatments that will likely tax my energy levels. So I must bid farewell to All Saints’—only this time I will not return (except for visits) . . . Words cannot express how much I will miss being with you as priest, friend, and colleague. I thank you for all the loving support and for being my teachers on so many occasions. I will be moving on to Church of the Epiphany in San Carlos where I have served as Interim Rector (and still haves ties) as a voluntary priest associate. It is much too early for me to “hang up my stole.” Fortunately, Epiphany is within minutes of my home [in Redwood City], and my granddaughter begins Godly Play there next Sunday.

Walt wrote to me [on 9 September]: For a little over the last three years, I have deeply enjoyed . . . participating in the life of All Saints’ Church and fully appreciated sharing in the ministry of this unique and wonderful community. When I came to be minister of music, we both hoped that the relationship would have been longer than it has, but we were also both aware that my primary calling of scholarship could bring it to a close sooner than might be ideal. Last year, when it became apparent that it was unlikely that I would find a teaching position near to All Saints’, I felt it was important that I move back to Seattle. You creatively proposed that scheduling of rehearsals could be adapted and I could do a weekend commute to continue in the life of All Saints’. I don’t think that either of us thought that I’d still [be] doing that commute twenty-one months later. That commute has become a real challenge, for both professional and personal reasons . . .To answer the call that I understand God to have given me requires that I “finish the move” back to Seattle . . . Therefore, it is my intention that All Saints’ Sunday, November 6, 2011, will be my last Sunday . . . I wish you and the people of All Saints’ the very best, and only wish that I could have mastered the art of being at two places at once, for then I could have both returned to Seattle and remained at All Saints’.

REST IN PEACE: One of the best stewards among us, Ralph Wentworth, died last Saturday, 10 September, at the age of 95. A long-time member of All Saints’, Ralph was the oldest parishioner for several years. Many of you may not know him as he was inactive due to declining health. While he was an active parishioner, Ralph wore many “hats” in both the parish and the diocese, and he and his good friend Neil Little served as our successful two-person “welcoming” committee until Neil’s death in 1993. Ralph arranged to be cremated and to have his ashes buried in a family plot in a cemetery at an Episcopal Church in Bangor, Maine, where he was born and raised. We will honor Ralph this coming Sunday in the Prayers of the People and with a special intention for the repose of his soul at the Great Thanksgiving. For your personal prayer please use the traditional commendation, and this lovely addendum sent to me by Caroline Talbot when I e-mailed Ken and her news of Ralph’s death:

• William Bonnell, the newest member of All Saints’, who transferred just last week from the Church of the Advent of Christ the King, San Francisco.

WELCOME TO COLBY ROBERTS, who will be installed as the Parish Seminarian at All Saints’ for the 2011-12 academic year on Sunday, 25 September. A member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus, Colby is a student at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, and a parishioner at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in San Francisco. We welcome Colby and give special thanks to Larry Rosenfeld who will again serve as Chair of the Lay Seminarian Committee, which supports and guides the seminarians who serve All Saints’ from both CDSP and the School for Deacons.

Summer Book Club

Newborn by Agustín Maes

Discussion on Wednesday evening, 7 September, 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Newborn, a novella by All Saints’ Office Administrator Agustín Maes, was one of two runners-up for the 2011 Paris Literary Prize, an international competition sponsored by legendary Paris bookshop Shakespeare and Company in collaboration with the de Groot Foundation.  The winner and runners-up, chosen from among over 430 novellas submitted from 34 countries, were announced on 16 June during an award event held at the Société des Gens de Lettres in Paris.  Erica Wagner, Jury Chair and Literary Editor of The Times (London), wrote:

“Along with my fellow judges, I was dead certain that the author of one of the runners-up, Newborn—about a naïve teenage girl forced to deal with an unwanted pregnancy—must be by a young woman.  I mean, obviously, right?  Nope.  Its author turned out to be Agustin Maes, an American man… The kind of imagination evidenced by a story such as his is a reminder of what a magic trick really fine writing can be.  It is the writer’s job wholly to inhabit the characters he or she invents: a rare gift that few authors truly possess.”

-  Join us for our weekly study of the Gospel for the following Sunday.  During this series we will give special attention to how the Gospel reading can be used for prayer, at church on Sunday, and at home.   If you can come early: Mass at 6 p.m., bag supper at 6:30 p.m.

A parish barbecue pot luck with great food, fun games, and good music in the Parish Garden and Hall, hosted by All Saints’ Vestry and Officers.
